Jason is busy working on next podcast, it is in the being written stage and we hope to record in the next few days. We had a recording correction that was needed in Chapter 8 of The Buddha, Geoff and Me and we are awaiting the new files. Please bear with us while we get you the next show.

We are also working flat out trying to get money in the door to pay bills (like rent and food).

We received a comment that our attitude was not very Buddhist by not sticking to our 2 week schedule. The person leaving the comment left an email address, visitor@visitor.com so we deleted it. If the person would like to leave a valid email address we will give them another opportunity to complain.

We are smiling and doing our best! I can honestly say I have never been so happy! So keep tuned, its coming

Problems with the Podcast Feed

About 6 months ago, a listener with good intentions published our Podshow.com feed on ITunes. This led a number of listeners to get confused as the feeds are different and contain different shows. Last week we tried to get this feed removed and instead of this incorrect feed being removed, the correct feed was deleted.

With it we lost over 30 5star recommendations on ITunes and how most of our listeners get the show. We are as you can imagine concerned that people may have thought we are not around, but we are, we are here! If you are having problems getting the show, we apologise. Determined to bounce back we are providing you with 2 shows this weekend.

SGI-UK is presenting an exhibition to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Josei Toda's declaration for the abolition of nuclear weapons.
Addressing questions that include: How can we move from a century of war to a century of peace? What does it mean to respect the dignity of life? What difference can the actions of just one individual make?

Frost steams the breath of each warm-blooded creature,

Braving cold winds or crouched down in their lair.

All surface speaks silence, a semblance of death.

But if one is patient, and watches, digs deep

Every now and again you get the chance to make a good friend, just by dint of circumstance, you're in corridor, you say hello to someone and somehow you connect. This is a snapshot taken by CC of one of those encounters. The man is Geoff Smith, and I am honoured to call him a friend. BBC World Service Interview

Some of you will know that recently we were invited to the BBC World Service to give an interview for a programme they produce called Heart & Soul. We have so far been treated with great respect and kindness by Caroline Donne and Dan Damon of the BBC. The programme is about religion and podcasting and will be broadcast this weekend of 21, 22, 23rd October. It can be heard on the programme's web page (Heart and Soul) from midnight on Saturday 21st onwards. You can hear it on the radio in the UK on Sunday 22nd October on Medium Wave 648 KH, 0730 and 1730 GMT and on digital radio.

Also we submitted audio comments from Dash, Donna and Vittoria and we think they have taken snippets from A Buddhist Podcast to play on the show as well.

I confess to feeling a little anxious as you don't know how these things will go until they've gone...and seeing as its gone being anxious about it won't bring an editing suite et al!

South Downs District Public Talk

South Downs District is a new and flourishing district of SGI-UK. It is situated on the South Downs of Sussex in the UK. The two main towns in the district are Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill.

On Wednesday 22nd November 2006, they will be having their first public lecture at the Burgess Hill Theatre Club (opposite St. John's Church). Jason will be giving a short talk on The Human Revolution and the Youth Division members are going to give some personal experiences.

The district are getting together to chant to make this activity an incredible success. Please let us know if you would like more information on where it is. If you would like to come or want to bring a guest it would be great to see you!

Jim Burtles email about the Mayonaise Jar

Another gem from the mighty Jim. Jim Burtles sent this to me today. Its another 'share me' email, but I like it...
When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar... and the coffee...

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.
He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the
jar. He shook the jar lightly and the pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.
He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.
He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous "Yes."

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

"Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognise that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things. Your family, your children, your faith, your health, your friends, and your favourite passions; things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter; your job, your house, and your car. The sand is everything else; the small stuff.
If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.
Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the waste disposal. Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee
represented.
The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."

They dive so deep but come up fine
Into the sky their parents soar

From flower to flower fly busy bees
Fat and furry but fly with easy
Cute squirrels on their fir cones gnaw
And through it all the Mystic Law

Small children paddle in the sea
But run when waves reach to their knee
They love ice-cream and want some more

Seed pods exploding all around
To start new life within the ground
While roses produce hips and haws

IE issues solved!

Hi all, just saw the comments from Jason and Charlie and had a dig around. I too am guilty of using Firefox (amazing though it is) and not considering that 90% of the users out there use IE (stop it I tell you!). Seems the theme for this blog serves up one stylesheet for IE and another for other browsers - and in this case the IE stylesheet was not included with the theme! I have rectified that now, sorry if this upset any IE users but think of it as a great benefit - you can now see our blog in full and glorious technicolour, and you may have noticed that the Buddhists are using Firefox, Safari or Opera - and we are pretty switched on people, you know!

Anyway, hope that helps.

iKissFm, Vittoria Conn and A Buddhist Podcast

Busy couple of days in Belfast. Back tonight to some great emails from listeners and friends. It turns out that Paul Monaco from ikissfm heard Vittoria's song, Mirror and got in touch with her. Vittoria tells Paul that the song is about the practice of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism and Paul goes on a search to find out more and finds our Podcast! Paul tells Vittoria and we find out about Vittoria...its a mad thing this internet!!!

Missed Eileen McManus-Beckmann's and Jackie Franks lecture last night in Crawley, Karen told me how great it was....ah well next time!

Two great people I know are busy putting out new art! David Southam has an exhibition at Throgmortons which opens next week on the 20th July and Xavier Pick is busier than ever with more painting and work, such a vibrant rich style. I would love to a have a huge white wall in my home that I could put one of his pictures on! On the subject of great Buddhist talent I have come across lately, I love the song, Mirror by Vittoria Conn!

Belfast is quiet tonight, the season for going on a march or a holiday!

Technical problems - update

Hi all. It seems that the root of the problem is that iTunes have added a new way of categorising podcasts and although this has been implemented by our hosts at libsyn, it breaks the feed. It seems the problem orginates with libsyn so I will contact them and get back asap. As Jason says, by far the best solution is to resubscribe to:

...that way you will get all the non-audio posts too if you use a newsreader on online blog subscription service.

Problems with ITunes!!!

Ok folks, the wonderful people at Apple have been updating their ITunes software, which 98% of you use to get the show. There are some bugs in the code which have affected us. Can I recommend you resubscribe with to another feed that David has kindly provided, http://abuddhistpodcast.com/feed. Also probably a good idea to update your ITunes software to version 6.05.

think I'm gettin soft, anyway this tale moved me

I'm not known for forwarding stories or emails. So when this came past my desk today, I read it and thought, you know maybe I should put that on the blog. I have no idea where it came from or why, but its a nice tale and you can always choose not to read it. Its a copy and past job and what you see is what I read.
" Subject: Two choices

You make the choice! Don't look for a punch line; There isn't one!
Read it anyway. My question to all of you is: Would you have made the same choice?
At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learning disabled children,the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended.
After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question: "When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does is done with perfection. Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do. Where is the natural order of things in my son?"
The audience was stilled by the query.
The father continued. "I believe,that when a child like Shay, physically and mentally handicapped comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes, in the way other people treat that child."Then he told the following story:
Shay and his father had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked,"Do you think they'll let me play?" Shay's father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but the father also understood that if his son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.
Shay's father approached one of the boys on the field and asked if Shay could play, not expecting much. The boy looked around for guidance and said, "We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning."
Shay struggled over to the team's bench put on a team shirt with a broad smile and his Father had a small tear in his eye and warmth in his heart. The boys saw the father's joy at his son being accepted. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three. In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as his father waved to him from the stands. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again. Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.
At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game? Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible 'cause Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball.
However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing the other team putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least be able to make contact. The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay. As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.
The game would now be over, but the pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game.
Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the head of the first baseman, out of reach of all team mates. Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, "Shay, run to first! Run to first!" Never in his life had Shay ever ran that far but made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled.
Everyone yelled, "Run to second, run to second!"
Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to second base. By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball, the smallest guy on their team, who had a chance to be the hero for his team for the first time. He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions and he too intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head. Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home.

All were screaming, "Shay, Shay, all the Way!"
Shay reached third base, the opposing shortstop ran to help him and turned him in the direction of third base, and shouted, "Run to third! Shay, run to third" As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams and those watching were on their feet were screaming, "Shay, run home! Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the "grand slam" and won the game for his team.
That day, said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world.
Shay died that winter, so never saw another game, but he died having never forgotten being the hero and making his Father so happy and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!
AND, NOW A LITTLE FOOTNOTE TO THIS STORY:
We all send thousands of jokes through the e-mail without a second thought, but when it comes to sending messages about life choices, people think twice about sharing. The crude, vulgar, and often obscene pass freely through cyberspace, including regularly on this board, but public discussion about decency is too often suppressed in our schools and workplaces.
If you're thinking about forwarding this message,chances are that you're probably sorting out the people on your address list that aren't the "appropriate" ones to receive this type of message. Well, the person who sent you this believes that we all can make a difference. We all have thousands of opportunities every single day to help realize the "natural order of things." So many seemingly trivial interactions between two people present us with a choice: Do we pass along a little spark of love and humanity or do we pass up that opportunity to brighten the day of those with us the least able, and leave the world a little bit colder in the process?

Hello everyone, sorry we did not manage to get a show out this weekend. We had to fit in a bit more than usual (is that possible) with work and family. We are planning to record this Friday evening the next Lotus Sutra Lectures!

We had a great Mens Division meeting last night, the theme was "Love and Sex" and the honest and heartmoving exchange of experiences was extraordinarily. The men had so much to say that we are going to continue with the subject next month as well and on until it is all said.

What motivated me to pick this theme was this quote from p715,716 of the Gosho, "Repaying Debts of Gratitude" and it reads, "If the lion is sleeping and you do not wake him, he will not roar". The theme last night gave the lion a good kick and the roar was deafening.

"Lizzie woke up this afternoon. She has been looking at people and seems to hear things. The physio says she can move her limbs. She isn't fitting despite not being on the really heavy anti-convolsants. She will continue to be sedated tonight and we think that tomorrow they will aim to bring her round properly and have her breathing herself. This is all such fantastic news and shows a massive turnaround since the awful things we were hearing on Friday. Of course there is still a long way to go in getting Lizzie better but what we have seen shows what all that Daimoku can do. Thank you so much to everybody and lets please keep that Daimoku rota roaring on for the fortnight and see fantastic proof. Thank you so much.
